There is a definite low power flavour to this issue. Incisor first reported on the low energy version of Bluetooth 12 months ago. In this month’s issue we report that both CSR and the Bluetooth SIG are showing working versions of Bluetooth low energy and also look at other solutions such as ZigBee, Z-Wave from Zensys and energy harvesting solutions from the EnOcean Alliance and its members.

This month’s issue sees us review what is happening in the test and certification industry. Plus, Bluetooth semiconductor industry leader CSR launches its seventh-generation silicon, which includes Bluetooth, Bluetooth low energy, GPS and FM radio technologies. Then, two new movies from IncisorTV preview this month: these are a new feature produced for the Bluetooth Special Interest Group that provides a comprehensive introduction to Bluetooth low energy wireless technology, while the second is a commercial produced on behalf of CSR as part of the BlueCore7 launch package.

Less than a year ago, a low power wireless technology from Nokia and called Wibree was officially added to the portfolio of technologies that sit under the Bluetooth umbrella. As the Wibree Forum was subsumed, it disappeared, and so did the name Wibree. Ultra Low Power Bluetooth was the name we were to use. But… During May it was announced that Ultra Low Power Bluetooth is now to be known as Bluetooth low energy wireless technology. Is this a good name? As we discuss in our introduction on page 2, names are important, and time will tell if this becomes common parlance.
